Harvest Day, Edgemont, 2004
“Here’s a chance to be a celebrity chef at Edgemont Village,” Patti says. “You will meet a lot of people, and besides Nancy Stibbard of Capilano Suspension Bridge is asking.” I’m on! September 19th.

It’s Harvest Day at Edgemont Village. A warm and sunny September outing. Arriving at the appointed time, I find the BBQ’s fully staffed, the cash table doing a roaring business, and the last thing they need is another chef. “What we need is line control,” boss lady Robyn McVicker tells me.

From celebrity chef to line control officer. OK. For the next couple of hours I tell people that THIS line is to pay for the hamburgers, and THAT line is to pick them up. But they soon figure it out for themselves.

This gives me a chance to wander over to meet (again) Clara Westwell-Roper whom I first met at the Premier’s Scholarship Awards – outstanding North Shore student. She is now in St. John’s Ambulance Corp uniform with her friend, waiting to serve, but medical emergencies are rare this day. Studies at UBC are going well.

Next stop, RCMP community policing, where volunteers are taking fingerprints and photographs of the kids, for parents concerned about any eventuality. Busy. They will even show you how to take a DNA swab for the record.

The flower stall is selling magnificent sunflowers. I don’t think I’ve seen sunflowers as a florist item before.

The mountain bike demo attracts the younger crowd. Do they really ride along the top of that picket fence?

Finally, buy an arm’s length of raffle tickets and hope to win the 50-50 draw. Has this lottery been licensed, flashes through my mind. Who cares? Not me. But just to be sure, I give my arm’s length of tickets to Clara and her friend.

Hundreds of Edgmonters celebrate this magnificent fall day. The vibes are friendly and relaxed. A wonderful corner of our community.
