Seniors Accommodation:
Kiwanis Court Renovated
Harry Martin and David Angel are special: they are the prime movers behind our West Vancouver Kiwanis organization’s contribution to affordable seniors accommodation on the North Shore.

The occasion today (September 8, 2004) was the celebration of the completion of the renovation of Kiwanis Court, a large seniors housing facility located between 21st and 22nd Street in West Vancouver.

It is a fine older wooden building. However, like many other structures in B.C., it had been built with more attention to design flair than to our rainy climate. It had developed leaks and it was beginning to deteriorate.

For once, let’s give the Feds their due: Central Housing and Mortgage Corporation (CMHC) came to the rescue with concessionary financing. This meant that newly minted MP Don Bell – until recently our North Vancouver District Mayor – got to make the presentation, and along with his more westerly counterpart, MP John Reynolds. Other assorted dignitaries (including Harry and David) got to help cut the ribbon.

Others played a role too, and let’s recognize the presence of, contribution of, and the skilled and sensitive leadership of, Shane Ramsey, CEO of BC Housing, a provincial crown corporation active in this field.

The accompanying photographs capture the spirit of the occasion. Since the lack of affordable housing on the North Shore is described as approaching “crisis” proportions (see accompanying article this newsletter) it is vital that the existing stock of affordable seniors housing be properly maintained. Kiwanis and Harry and David did it.
