Coho Festival Album
Early September – Coho Festival Time. Nobody can say the North Shore doesn’t take saving the salmon seriously – particularly when it can be combined with an outdoor fair in the blazing sun.

This year’s festival, organized by Bill Chapman, Dina Zeitler, Gordon Adair, Jim McCarthy, Bill Soprovich and etc. etc. etc. continued the growth pattern of success. Last year it was rained out. This year, it was so successful we were running out of salmon and corn by 3pm. I was told the Festival salmon BBQ I worked on had banked about $10,000 by mid-afternoon – all of destined for coho salmon habitat recovery.

“Where were you Ralph, John van Dongen came all the way from Victoria to attend!” I grit my teeth. “As a matter of fact, I boiled corn and served it on a platter from 11 am to 3 pm, and in fact was introduced WITH Minister van Dongen up on stage.” is my reply.

“Well, that just shows you how much you know about politics. Nobody expects you to do that – you’re supposed to show up for the photo op and then wander around meeting your constituents. Instead of manhandling plastic boxes full of corn all day long!”

Well, silly me, I guess I’m still learning. Indeed, my compatriots seemed to disappear in short order, once the press had left. But what the heck, somebody has to dish out that corn!

Here’s my Coho Festival photo album:

Photo 1: celebrity chefs former AG Russ Fraser and MP John Reynolds flipped salmon burgers for the crowd.

MLA Katherine Whittred (North Vancouver Lonsdale) also displayed her celebrity chef prowess.

James Ridge, the new administrator of North Vancouver District, and MLA Ted Nebbeling.

Local attorney Nicole Garton who practices law with Sager Anderson, handled the BBQ cash.

The Squamish Indian Band performed prayers and ceremonies for the public gathering on their lands.

Katherine, John, and Ralph, MLA’s all.

Hon. John van Dongen, the man in charge of fish in BC’s cabinet, detoured on his way home to Abbotsford, to attend.

Cat’s Eye celebrity Catherine Barr of the North Shore Outlook newspaper showed her charm selling tickets for BBQ salmon on a bun.
