BC Ferries - Floating Advertising Platforms
In September, CEO David Hahn of BC Ferries invited MLAs to an unveiling of exterior graphics that will be applied to the hulls of three “Super C-Class” ferries being built in Flensburg, Germany.

My friend Val Roddick (MLA, Delta South) and I, both representing communities heavily impacted by BC Ferries, were glad to attend. We were not sure exactly what to expect, but were amazed as images were unveiled of the first vessel “Coastal Renaissance”, followed by “Coastal Inspiration” and “Coastal Celebration”, featuring giant photographs of winter sports and British Columbia scenes. These images will serve as massive invitations to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Thanks to collaboration between BC Ferries , VANOC and 3M Canada, this will be the largest marine application of printed graphics ever undertaken. All of the decals were produced in Vancouver and will be applied at the shipyard in Flensburg, Germany.

The vessels' journey to Vancouver will be via the Panama Canal, and will include promotional stops in London, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

Scenes applied to the hulls include:

• Mercedes Nicoll of Canada competing in the Women’s Snowboard Half Pipe at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games;

• Kootenay National Park - one of 41 national parks in Canada , this will represent the south-western region of the Canadian Rocky Mountains;

• Kim St-Pierre, Charline Labonte and Sarah Vaillancourt of Canada celebrating after their 4-1 victory over Sweden in the Women's Ice Hockey final at the 2006 Turin Games.
