Lions Gate Jamatkhana
I would be remiss not to describe again the very emotional, traditional Muslim funeral service I attended with fellow MLA John Nuraney, at Lions Gate Jamatkhana. This was the service for two Ismaili ladies fatally crushed when their automobile was hit by a load of raw logs dumped by a logging truck on Highway 1’s Capilano Curve.

The service was held at the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim Mosque, also known as the Lions Gate Jamatkhana (place of gathering), in North Vancouver. It was a tragically memorable occasion.

Since attending that very emotional service, I have worked actively to improve the marginal safety conditions on that curve, and have managed to drive it onto the Ministry of Transport’s radar screen; however, more work remains to be done.

West Vancouver architect Farouk Noormohamed received many accolades for his design of this building , which actually was converted from a former sports centre. True to its origins, this architectural showpiece houses, in addition to the core prayer hall, a social hall with multi-purpose sports court, a library, three squash courts, and classrooms for children's activities and spiritual instruction. How many other North Shore places of worship have a squash court? Both mind and body are well attended to. Impressive.
