Replacing a Unitarian Roof
Parishioners of the North Shore Unitarian Church recently benefited from close to $70,000 in gaming funds from the provincial government, as facilitated by MLA Ralph Sultan. This church serves residents from the North Shore and Bowen Island to Deep Cove.

The provincial government capital grant is intended to be used for seismic upgrading and roof replacement. It builds on the May 2006 Major Capital Project Grant of $49,750 for Phase 1 of the project. The Church also received a $40,000 Direct Access Grant in January for Child and Adult Education, Community Outreach and Youth Program Services.

Formed in 1967, The North Shore Unitarian Church moved to their present facilities in 1982. The growing congregation has more than 250 members. The church offers an array of space for rent to local community groups. The basement, equipped with a kitchen, supports large group gatherings and the Stewart building offers several classrooms ideal for small gatherings, meetings and education classes. Numerous North Shore arts and cultural groups use the church buildings.

The accompanying two photographs show Ralph in the church parking lot with Harold Rosen, Minister, and a church group applauding after being told that the means were now at hand to fix the leaking roof!

Not knowing much about Unitarians, I picked up a brochure during my visit which said, in part, “We …have always been heretics. We are heretics because we want to choose our faith, not because we desire to be rebellious.… Our history has carried us… to a rich pluralism that includes theist and atheist, agnostic and humanist, pagan, Christian, Jew and Buddhist.… We invite you to join us.”

A most interesting church! I am delighted to have helped them obtain funds to repair their roof.
