Beer and Cheerleaders
Constituents ask me what life as an MLA is all about. Well, sometimes it’s beer and cheerleaders.

My handlers suggest I accept an invitation from Molson’s to appear at Westview Shopping Centre, where the Memorial Cup will be on display. Constituents can have their picture taken with me on the sidewalk outside the BC Liquor Distribution Branch. This sounds good to me.

I appear at the designated hour but can’t find the expected crush of fans, photographers or reporters. Oh well, I’m a bit early.

Scouting around, a cashier inside tells me that a Molson rep. has been stacking cases of Canadian lager, and that the cup may arrive eventually, to be strategically positioned in front of the beer cases. OK, I can work with that. I get out my camera.

The cup arrives. An impressive chunk of silver, won by our Vancouver Giants in an exciting hockey final against the Medicine Hat Tigers. But no crowds. It seems people aren’t terribly interested in their MLA.

Then, a cheerleader from the B.C. Lions football cup arrives. Rather good looking, I admit. She smiles at the passing patrons.

Soon, there is a lineup of people who want to have their photograph taken with Miss B.C. Lions, as I call her. My role: I operate the camera.

The moral of this story: between politicians and cheerleaders, there is no contest. Even cases of Canadian lager won’t tip the scales.
