Referring to the dropping of local bidders from the upcoming ferries construction contract, Michael Smith, in a column titled, “Sultan of Swat” right to go to bat for local shipbuilding industry,” wrote that “Liberal backbencher Ralph Sultan has shown he’s not afraid to whack his own government … now the “Sultan of Swat” is at it again…”

Referring to the same ferries contract, Vancouver Province editorialists gave a “Thumbs Up” rating to Ralph Sultan for his comments in a letter to a constituent, objecting to the dropping of local shipbuilders from the bid process.
